Why are Home Devotions important?
Home devotions are vital in the life of every Christian. Home devotions are a constant reminder of the words and promises of God through Christ our Savior, in our lives. As Martin Luther stated, “For God gave the Word that we should impress it upon ourselves… Without this practice our souls become rusty, as it were, and we lose ourselves.” The words that God commands “shall be on your heart… You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:6, 8-9). Home devotions are also a time to encourage teaching and learning about the Christian faith in the family. It is the duty of parents to teach and model the faith to pass along to future generations. Home devotions provide the primary method for families to read the word of God and discuss the implications in their lives. Parents are instructed to “train up a child” (Proverbs 22:6) and to “teach [the words of God] diligently to your children” (Deuteronomy 6:7). It is our duty as Christians to remain faithful to God as He remains faithful to us through the promises we receive in His word.
